Getting Together to Give Back

The Friendship Alphabet a U-tales collaborators.  Cover illustration by Anders Lindholm.   My"P" page contribution.

Sometimes being a small part of a large effort can be very rewarding. I recently had the opportunity to work with some of the world's most talented writers and illustrators of children's book. It was part of an effort of the gang at U-tales.com. They had the inspiration to join forces to create a book that would teach children the virtues of friendship, through words and pictures. Here was the tricky part, we couldn't use the word friendship in our pages. All of the profits would go to Pencils for Promise, a non-profit that works to provide education for all throughout the world. It happens to be the same charity as authors we can support with a portion of our individual profits from our own books on the U-tales site.

If you're not familiar, U-tales is a website wholly dedicated to e-books for kids. With a worldwide audience it has a large audience. I was contacted by the group last summer before they launched, with an invitation to be part of the initial effort. I was very honored to be thought of well enough to be invited. By fall I had two e-books published with U-tales, by their launch date. I hope that the world doesn't ever lose our love for physical books, but I can see the writing on the wall. As the next generation learns to read on their parents I-phones, I-pads and Kindles. U-tales is a very loving and high class site to fit that bill perfectly.

My "P" page posted above has an adjoining page that says "The perky puppy and his panda pal, slurp a pot of pasta with the praying mantis, Mr. Chow. " I hope I managed to get the friendship in with all my P's.  Shhh.... don't tell anyone, I did cheat a little, the Chinese symbols watermarked on the drawing are the symbol for friendship.  I was very glad to be able to participate in this worthy project and humbled to be part of such an outstanding community.

If you wish to see the entire book, check it out on U-Tales at  http://utales.com/books/the-friendship-alphabet . While you're there check out my books, especially my new one, "Wiggly Tiggly Tell Me Who". This book was first attempt at a book with sound and animation. It's a new twist on the old pop-up book. By the way, if you have any wee ones in your life, you can gift them a subscription to the site.

For more information on Pencils for Promise, visit their site and read their heartwarming story.  http://www.pencilsofpromise.org/  So go curl up with a good book, be it hardback or virtual and read a good story.

The Talented Youth of Today May Surprise You

Design campaign for the state of Utah
Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia is currently running their Annual Fellowship and Student Art Exhibition. It's a chance to see what the talented group of women have been creating all year. I must say it is pretty impressive. This women from the ages of 18 to ...well  I don't know even older than me, have managed to compile a splendid showing of art ranging from fine arts, graphic design (that's me), illustration, fashion and interior designs, sculpture, photography and much much more.

I am honored to be among these very talented women, with three of my own pieces hanging in the show. After a long hard year, it was a welcome confirmation that I was traveling on the right path in my career. The piece you see above was from an assignment where we were given a state to design a logo using their two abbreviation letters. The next step was to create a postcard campaign using facts about the state with the logo elements. Take notice to the bees, all made from logo pieces. You may also view my Kabel poster as well as a hand made book I have there.

The school and galleries are located at 20th Street and the Parkway in Philadelphia. I would highly recommend you stopping by the galleries at Moore from now till April 14th and take a peek at what the future holds within the art and design world. Plus admissions free, you could make a day of it on the parkway, the Museum of Natural Science is celebrating their 200th birthday and the Franklin Institute are all next door.

Becareful What You Do Someone May Be Watching

I recently was interviewed by Moore College of Art and Design's online magazine "Moore Her Campus". I was honored and surprised to be asked. I go about my day while at school, loving what I do. I work hard and try and treat all with respect. The questions that the interviewer Larisa Manzo asked me, surprised me. I didn't think anyone was paying attention to what I said or did. Seems I was wrong. I was glad what I did made a good impression. We can just as easily get caught in our not so finest moments, when someone is paying attention. I've attached the article. Read it and enjoy.

Pam Convery- Hamilton

Saturday, February 18, 2012
Name:  Pam Hamilton
Major/minor: Graphic Design/illustration
Year: sophomore
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you go to school before Moore? What other degrees do you have? What is it like being a non-Traditional student?
I graduated in 1982 from bucks county community college with a associates in fine arts. After that I went to Tyler for a bit, but left to raise a family. I have 4 kids from 16 to 23. I kept up with my art though. Working for as an art director for a print house, learning everything from design to finish. Even taking classes to learn to run the presses. I also worked in a small sign shop design and making signs. But most of the last 2o years has been spent working in real estate, of course loving the marketing and materials design aspect of it. I opened a real estate office for a company in 2009, but with the economy the way it was found myself unemployed. I decided to reinvent myself and be what I wanted to be when I grew up, an artist. I had continued to go back to school on and off, brushing up on my skills. SO in the fall of 2010 I went back to Bucks to learn photoshop and illustrator, then in the spring took an illustration class. I realized how happy I was and saw some success, so I decided to finally finish up my BFA and applied to Moore. Funny thing was I received a phone call while away at my oldest sons graduation from Florida state university last spring. So he was completing and moving on and I was continuing my journey. Being a non-traditional student has it's challenges. I manage my school schedule so that I can complete 2 days at full time. Leaving my house at 6am and returning after 11pm. That leaves me time to work on the other days. With school, work, family and volunteering it leads to a tight schedule. So time management is crucial. I ate my lunch at the computer, do homework on the train and try to squeeze every minute out of the day. The other thing that has been a challenge is the financial end. Having been unemployed for awhile, loans are out of the question, so I have work on every scholarship and grant I can find. SO looking back on when I first attended college, I wish someone would have told me that you have all the time and money necessary to get the job done. My theory now is where there's a will there's away, and I'll get it done.
Were you always interested in art or is it something that you realized after your other degrees?
Most definitely I have always loved art, from a small child I was drawing and making things. A trip to an art store or even a hardware store was a treat for me.
Why did you pick graphic design as your major? and what is your favorite part of graphic design?
I love design and illustration, but honestly I picked the graphic design because at my age I figured time was of the essence to get a career running and earning money. SO I thought GD was the fastest route to that. Although I illustrate all the time. Even writing and illustrating children's ebooks for utales.com.
What and where is your current job? What type of things do you do?
Besides the real estate, I've work with a high end sign company since last fall. It's been fun to use my new found computer and design skills there. Lately I've been doing a lot of work for the Philadelphia Phillies. In my spare time I illustrate my books for Utales and freelance what I can.
What is it like working in the design field and going to school for graphic design?
To me it's heaven. I'm finally doing what I love. I've always told my children to follow their passions and if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. I'm finally listening to my own words. My two long days at Moore are my favorite days of the week. All you girls inspire me daily.
You are always talking about your design jobs or new opportunities. How do you come across them?
I read a lot, research and am always keeping my eyes open. The Utales stuff came from a portfolio I posted on the graphic design guild. I network anywhere where I can. Opportunities are everywhere, you just have to be open to them. You know what they say is that LUCK is laboring under correct knowledge. Use the skills you're developing at more and the awesome connections they have. It's a great community to be part of. I also try and turn class projects into worthy projects, for instance for my illustration class last spring we had to design a poster for a festival. So instead of something fictitious I researched and found the a contest for the Santa Paula citrus festival in California. One on the country's largest citrus festivals. It let me create something that I felt was worthwhile. To my surprise after the semester I received notice that it was chosen as the winner. So now I have a nice piece for my portfolio and some street cred to go with it.
What would be your advice for young students about school and job finding?
Realize that the world is at your feet, really what you think is hard now is probably the easiest and best time of your life. Relax and enjoy it, but take it seriously. You have an awesome opportunity at your feet. Approach what you love with passion. Network, network, network. Take advantage of the web, create a website, post your best work. Write a blog it's easy marketing. My website and blog aren't the best out there, but they get me out there and they're always a work in progress.

What is exercise?

"A pair of pears"

What do you think of when someone says "I exercise everyday"? Like most of us you probably think gym, running, weights, sweating etc. But we can exercise other parts of our bodies too. Do you read or write daily? Then you are exercising your mind. Do you you draw or sketch everyday? Then it's your hand to eye coordination, plus your creativity that's getting the workout.

This year as part of my New Years resolutions I have chosen to read and write daily, as well as sketch. So far so good. I found a beautifully illustrated Tao de Ching book, that I read a passage daily out of ( I figure I can get through it 3 times in a year) and then journal my thoughts on the reading.  I am also reading 365 Days of Art , a daily exploration of art facts, tips and exercises. (Did you know that Van Gogh painted his Sunflowers to decorate his house in anticipation of Gauguin's visit?) I've got a small sketch book working along with that one.

At first it was challenging to sit daily and complete my tasks before my crazy day would unravel. Then I began to look forward to it. Eventually it became a crucial part to the beginning of my day. Now I can't complete my without those 2 habits. I've noticed that I'm thinking a bit clearer and that ideas into my creativity are flowing a bit smoother. The picture above "A pair of pears" done in pen and ink with pastel, was an exercise in sketching.

Not unlike the person training for a 5k race. At first a mile is hard, it eventually gets a bit easier. Then one day you realize your having fun.  The habit has added to your lifestyle. Let me ask you, what are your daily exercise habits? How do they make you feel and what have they added to your life? Go exercise, take a jog, read a book or pull out that sketchbook. Any way you look at it, exercise can be fun.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from the Hamilton 2011

Hi everyone- Long time no chat. It has been a long and succesful semester. Even though the two days I'm at school (managed to complete fulltime in two days) are very long. They are turning out to be my favorite days of the week. So glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to continue to follow my dreams. I have found that my creativity has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 4 months. The teachers at Moore College of Art, as well as my fellow students are so inspiring. Everyday we reach for new things. I look at my body of work for the semester and I can say I am very proud. A quick break for a few weeks and then back to work.

I wanted to share our family holiday card with everyone. It's a tradition here. I have been creating my own cards since I was a teenager. They have evolved over the years as my talents and our family has. So please enjoy our humor. I wish you all much love, luck and prosperity in 2012. A lot of people think that 2012 may be the end of times, personally I believe it will be a shift in human conciseness. So Peace and blessings to everyone.
